Bird Watching

Rajasthan’s lakes, ponds, marshlands and grasslands are a haven for bird lovers. One can find around 550 species of birds and most of these are residents.

The best colony of birds in the world is Keoladeo National Park situated In Bharatpur. It has more than 400 species of birds and more than 130 of them breed inside the park. Being a unique bird place, the UNESCO has recognised it as a world heritage site.

It is truly a paradise of feathered life which provides unlimited opportunities to bird watchers. Various other lakes and ponds spread over the state offer the enthusiast an opportunity to watch the activities of the birds.

The major wetlands other than Bharatpur are Kukas, Kalah, Bund, Buchora Chandii, Chhaparwara and Ramgarh in Jaipur, Siliserh Jaisamand and Mansarover in Alwar, Ana Sagar and Fatehsagar in Ajmer, Jaisamand, Pichhola and Badi Ka Talab in Udaipur, Balsamand and Sardar Samand in Jodhpur, Bassi Dam in Chittaurgarh and Meja Dam in Bhilwara.

The best season for bird watching starts with the onset of winter when marshlands and lakes are inhabited by migratory birds as well as resident birds.

In salt- water lakes, flamingos are also found, like in Pachpadra near Barmer and Sambhar near Jaipur. Bird watching g is a hobby which has minimum requirements. All you need is a binocular.

Rajasthan Gems & Jewellery

In Rajasthan, men and women traditionally wore necklaces, armlets, anklets, earings and rings. With the advent of the Mughal Empire, Rajasthan became a major centre for production of the finest kind of jewellery. It was a true blend of the Mughal with the Rajasthani craftsmanship.

The Mughals brought sophisticated design and technical know-how of the Persian with them. The common link was the inherently decorative nature of the Muslim and Hindu art. The synthesis of the two cultures resulted in a period of grandeur and brilliance that dazzled the eyes of foreigners and has passed into legend. The jewellers of Rajasthan specilised in the setting of precious stones into gold and the enameling of gold. Jaipur and to some extent Alwar emerged as the enameling centers par excellence in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Enameling was introduced by Maharaja Man Singh who had cordial relations with Akbar.

The enameled gold staff of the Maharaja is unsurpassed even today for its brilliant colours. For enameling the piece to be worked on is fixed on a stick of lac and delicate designs if flowers, birds and fishes are etched on it. A wall is made to hold the colours while engravings are made in the grooves to heighten the interplay of the transparent shades, thus enhancing the beauty of the jewel. The surface is fully burnished by agate; then the enamel colours are filled in painstakingly as in a miniature painting.

The article is then left in the oven on a mica plate to keep it off the fire. Colours are applied in order of their hardness those requiring more later when set it is rubbed gently with the file and cleaned with lemon or tamarind. The craftsmen in Jaipur are believed to have originally come from Lahore. In Jaipur the traditional Mughal colours of red, green and white are most commonly used in enameling.

A quintessentially Indian technique and a speciality of Rajasthan is the setting of stones by means of Kundan the jewellery in which stones are set is rarely solid gold, it has a core of lac, a natural resin. The pieces which make up the finished object are first shaped by specialised craftsmen (and soldered together if the shape is complicated) and left in separate hollow halves. Holes are cut for the stones, any engraving or chasing is carried out and the pieces are enameled.

When the stones are to be set lac is inserted in the back and is then holes. Highly refined gold, the Kundan, is then used to cover the lac and the stone is pushed into the Kundan. More Kundan is applied around the edges to strengthen the setting and give it a neat appearance. This was the only form of setting for stones in gold until claw settings were introduced under the influence under the influence of western jewellery in the nineteenth century.

More than one craftsman was often in the making of a single piece of jewellery. The chiterias made the design, the ghaarias the engraving the meenakar and the sunar was the goldsmith. These craftsmen received patronage from the nobles and the kings and therefore they did not have to compromise their art for the sake of popular taste.

They could take as long as they liked over a piece of jewellery. Many of the old styles remain unchanged to this day. In Pratapgarh a special type of quasi-enameling is done in which extremely fine work on gold is daintily carried out on green enamel, which forms the base. In Nathdwara a good deal of enamel work on silver and other metals is done nowadays as a furtherance to this famous age old craft.

Merwara Mewar Circuit

Places of Interest: Ajmer – Pushkar – Merta – Nagaur

Located in the heart of Rajasthan, Ajmer is a small town with a very interesting past. Raja Ajai Pal Chauhan founded it in the 7th century A.D.. When you visit Ajmer today, it is difficult to imagine that this small city was at one time the seat of power of the Chauhan dynasty. It was from Ajmer that the last Hindu ruler of Delhi, Prithviraj Chauhan, controlled a major part of northern India. The legendary Prithviraj lived here and became a force to reckon with. His exploits are related with great wonder and sometimes disbelief. Few rulers of that time could match the charisma and heroism of this dynamic ruler. The Chauhans dominated Ajmer for many years and it was only toward the end of the 12th century that Prithviraj was killed in battle with Muhammad Ghori. That changed the history of this region totally.

The importance of Ajmer diminished with the death of its most valiant ruler and Ajmer passed under the Delhi Sultanate. From hen on, Ajmer saw many upheavals until Emperor Akbar came to the throne in 1556 and gave Ajmer the status of a full-fledged province. He also used Ajmer as a base for his operations in Rajputana. But Ajmer saw some more turbulence when the Mughals, the Marathas and the British all tried to interfere in the affairs of this province.

However, from 1818 AD onwards, the British Empire gained full control here and it remained so until India’s independence. The British left behind a legacy that still lives in the excellent educational institution, the colonial bungalows, the club and the old railway quarters.

Places to Visit

Today, Ajmer is more important as the final resting-place of the great Sufi saint- Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti. Muslims from all over the world revere the Dargah Sharif, where the saint lies buried. This has been so for centuries now. Even Akbar walked to the Dargah all the way from Agara. Every year, during the Urs, lakhs of Muslim devotees gather here to pay homage to the Garib Nawaz, the protector of the poor. If you want to see an altogether different side of this sleepy little town then make sure you’re here during the annual urs. This town where very little activity seems to be going on, on normal days, suddenly turns into a bustling, lively place. While you’re around the dargah, don’t miss seeing the beautiful Adhaidin-ka- Jonpra with its ornate calligraphic inscriptions. There are other areas of interest like the Taragarh Fort and the Ana Sagar lake with its marble pavillions.

Just as the Muslim revere the Dargah here, the Hindus accord the same sanctity to the holy town of Pushkar. Located jus 11 kms from Ajmer, the holy lake of Pushkar is believed to have been created by Lord Brahma himself. It is as important as Benaras of Puri. Devout Hindus believe that it is essential to visit Pushkar at least once in their lifetime. No pilgrimage is considered complete without a dip in the holy Pushkar lake. Pushkar has as many as 400 temples and 52 Ghats and the only temple in the country that is dedicated to Brahma is to be found here.

While Pushkar is a haven for the religiously inclined, it is also the venue of the one of the country’s most colorful cattle fairs- the Pushkar Fair. This annual fair is an unforgettable event when the entire little town is taken over by lakhs of animals and visitors. This is certainly the right time to be in Pushkar. Just relax and let yourself go, you’ll be carried away by the heady exuberance that is so much a part of the mela. Ride camels, shop at the colorful market, watch the sunset over the sand dunes, admire the beautiful clothes of the pilgrims, you can even try wearing the gorgeous odhmis and turbans.

Do what you will; Pushkar Fair is a once in a lifetime experience that you will want to repeat. The little 16th century town of Merta has much to offer by way of historicity. Drive around this fortified town and see some of the ruins that go back several centuries. The famous temple of Charbhuja is located in the center of the town and is visited by devotees throughout the year. The saint poetess Meera Bai was also associated with this temple. Another famous shrine is the mosque erected by Emperor Aurangzeb on the ruins of a Shiva temple. It is an imposing edifice, as are the various Hindu shrines surrounding it. A lake named after the founder Rao Duda, and called Dudasagar, still survives.

Merta is not your usual run of the mill tourist destination, it is a quiet town that is to be visited more for its unspoilt small town charm than for the conventional tourist attractions of bigger cities. Nagaur, on the other hand, is a small town but with numerous fascinating monuments.

The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan granted this town to Raja Amar Singh and the focal point here is the fort itself. Now painstakingly restored, the for t has some splendid palaces, temples, and palatial mansions, some of which have been built by Akbar and Shah Jahan. The beautiful Moti Mahal, Badal Mahal, and Hawa Mahal are superb architectural creations. The walls of the baradari are adorned with some exquisite frescoes, which are a combination of Persian and Nagaur styles. Some more splendid murals can be seen on the walls of the main temples here.

These paintings depict various episodes from the Ramayan and the Mahabharata. Nagaur is also the venue of an annual cattle fair that draws people from distant places and it is a good idea to combine one’s trip to nagaur with the fair. Though not as well attended as the Pushkar fair, it is still interesting to join the simple village folk, dressed in their best, as they buy and sell and seem out to enjoy themselves.

Take part in the folk dances, listen to music or just sit back and watch the camel races and the bullfights. You can pick up marble mementoes, miniature paintings and traditional textiles from this region.

Vagad Circuit

Places of Interest: Dungarpur- Bhanswar

Dungarpur and Banswara are the two important cities of the Vagad region. They have an interesting topography, ranging from the wild and rugged terrain in the northeast to fertile plains of alluvial soil in the southwest. These two districts are separated from each other by the magnificent Mahi river. This region was the stronghold of the Bhils and had its own unique lifestyle. Outside influences were minimal, as the region was quite inaccessible. Even today, this region does not fall in the regular tourist circuit but should be explored for its natural scenic beauty.

The area is rich in teak, mahua, and mango trees. The unspoilt-forested areas provide shelter to the jackal, jungle cat, Indian fox, hyena; black faced monkey and porcupine. This area is ideal for those interested in outdoor life. The terrain is ideal for walks and treks; you can spend your time studying the flora and fauna that is unique to this area. This region is so different from the rest of Rajasthan that it is like being in a different state. Also, not being on the tourist circuit, the facilities are a little limited here but you will find enough to make you trip comfortable. In fact, it is just the place to explore if you’re looking for the unexpected. Let yourself be surprised.

Places to See

Daungarpur was founded in the early 13th century. It is famous for its unique architectural style. The areas of interest here are Udai Bilas Palace and Juna Palace. Another interesting place to visit is the famous shrine dedicated to Shrinathji that lies on the bank of the Gaib Sagar lake. The water bodies in Dungarpur attract a large variety of migratory birds during the winters. Other commonly seen birds are partridges, peafowls, quails, cuckoos, eagles and vultures. Udai Bilas Palace is a good example of Rajput architecture with its intricately sculptured pillars and panels, impressive balconies, bracketed windows and marvelous panels. Juna Mahal is a seven storied structure, resembling a fortress with crenellated walls, turrets, narrow entrances and corridors. The interiors are embellished with beautiful frescoes, miniature paintings, glass and mirror work. While some of the most beautiful palaces all over Rajasthan were vandalised by invaders,

Dungarpur was fortunate to have been located in the deep interiors. Its wall paintings are well preserved and there is very little damage to the buildings. The surrounding areas are full of interesting little temple towns, archaeological sites of great importance and ruins of ancient kingdoms.

Visit Beneshwar located at the confluence of the Som and Mahi rivers. The Baneshwar temple is much revered by the Bhils. Other temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma are worth seeing for their exquisitely carved pillars and gateways. This is also the place to be in when the Bhils celebrate their biggest and most important fair- the Baneshwar Fair. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this is the largest gathering of the Bhils who collect here from all over, including Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. A visit to the fair can be great fun as you mingle with the crowds and watch the simple tribal folk enjoying themselves.

Dev Somnath is a splendid 12th century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is an exact replica of the original Somnath temple in Gujarat. When the original temple was destroyed several times by the Muslim invaders, devout Hindus decided to create this replica in the interiors so that it would remain safe. Galiyakot was once the capital of the Parmar kings but today it is renowned for its magnificent shrine dedicated to Sayed Fakhruddin. Thousands of devotees gather here during the Urs. Other important places to see are Baroda, the erstwhile capital ofVagad, where some temples still survive and Bhuvaneshwar, which can be visited for its famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Banswara is another big town of Vagad to be visited for its natural beauty. The name Banswar, too has been derived from bans, or bamboo which once grew in abundance here. The undulating green hills, deep forested valleys and lakes give this area its own unique feel. More than its architectural heritage, this region is nature lover’s paradise. You cn go for walks and treks, can watch birds and study the flora and allow you to enjoy the simple pleasures that keep the Bhils happy. Bhils constitute half of the total population of Banswar. A stonewall, now in ruins, surrounds the ancient town. An impressive palace of the former rulers of Banswar stands overlooking the town. There are several areas of interest tht can be explored in and around Banswar. The Mahi river has a number of islands that make for interesting spots, there is also a well maintained garden at the Kagdi Pick up and the Mani Dam. Other lakes like the Anand Sagar and Dalab Lake are also worth a visit.

For the adventurous, there are several interesting places located a short distance away from Banswar. Arthuna is famous for its 11th century temples, Talwar has ruins of some ancient temples that are famous for their carved idols, the temple of goddess Tripur Sundari is dedicated to Goddess Durga and has a beautiful idol of the goddess helped out of black stone.

———————————————————————————————————–
World renowned for its population of tigers, Kanha National park provides excellent opportunities for observing these magnificient animals in the wild on jeep drives and elephant backs.

While this lushly forested country is immediately familiar to readers of Rudyard Kipling, it has also recently been the site of extensive research on the ecology of tigers, deer, langour, Barasingha deer, gaur and wild dogs.

North of Kanha is Bandhavgarh National Park where the first white tiger was captured and most of the white tigers in captivity have descended from that tiger. In former times Bandhavgarh was the exclusive hunting preserve of the Mharaja of Rewa. Tigers are looked for on elephant back and their sighting is good. Past history pervades the forest in the form of immense sculpture of the Hindu god Vishnu, caves and a fort. Both the National Parks are country’s prime Tiger Reserve under Tiger project.

Not far from Bandhavgarh are the Temples of Khajuraho. They are the Master pieces of Temple architecture. Of the temples many have exquisitely and explicity carved scenes from Kamasutra. Build in the 10th to 11th century by the chandella dynasty, they are in a marvelous state of preservation.

JAISALMER

The ‘Golden City’ was founded in 1156 A. D. by Rao Jaisal. Located in the heart of the Thar desert, few cities in the world can match its magnificence. It was the domain of Bhati Rajputs, who were known for thier valour and chivalry. They levied taxes on the caravans laden with precious silks and spices that crossed the territory enroute Delhi on Sind. Jaisalmer soon became rich, so mush so that the merchnts, who also served as ministers in the royal courts, came to command more power than the rulers themselves. No wonder the large mansions of the merchants, built adjacent to each other in the nature of medieval desert cultures, are so profusely decorated that the palace, in comparison, appears to pale. Traces of this former opulence are seen inthe majestic buildings built here in luminous sandstone. While the havelis and the palace, along with the temples, will warrant the mandatory visits, Jaisalmer is incredible for the experience it brings alive of a medieval township caught in a timewarp, as you move up its ancient cobbled streets. For most part, its incredible sculptors were Muslim crargsmaen sho were induced, on their journeys to the patrons in others parts of India, to stay. The results is an archi-tectural purity that, because of Jaisalmer’s incredible isolation, is not seen elsewhere.

A heritage village today, remanants of almost 600 houses built then show the distinct lifestyles of the era. With rooms marked for womenfolk on the rear side and for men upon entrance, the village testifies the architectural knowledge prevalent then. Bikaner

DESCRIPTION
Five hundred years ago, a desert chieftain established his kingdom here, and over the centuries it has grown into an impressive town on the strength of its valorous and diplomatic resident. Bikaner city is bolstered by imposing walls and has a 16th century fort housing old palaces, temples and a mosque. Founded by Raja Rai Singh, the fort is distinguished by its long range of 37 pavilions, a line of balconies and aerial windows of varying designs. Its central fort offered the occupants safety from invaders, while inside, the rulers designed some beautiful apartments that carried echoes of opulence and in rain starved Bikaner-the images of monsoon clouds.

The city, however, has remained in many ways, timeless. Nearby is Deshnoke where, in a marble-fronted temple, rats are offered sanctuary for they are considered sacred. And at Gajner is a former hunting lodge by a lake. Conversation efforts have declared it a sanctuary. Till a few decades ago, Gajner was particularly celebrated for its imperial sandgrouse shoots, diplomatically arranged by Maharaja Ganga Singh for viceregal visitors.

CITY SIGHTS
Junagarh Fort: The fort of Bikaner, Junagarh, however, was built in 1593 by Raja Rai Singh who also served as a general in the army of Emperor Akbar. Made from red sandstone and encircled by a moat around which the modern city of Bikaner has spread in a somewhat erratic fashion, Junagarh consists of several palaces and apartments in a remarkable state of preservation. The art of mason and sculptor is most obvious in the recreation of delicate stone screens, kiosks, pavilions and a series of arched entrances to buildings reached entrances to buildings reached from corridors that have windows overlooking the city beyond.

Anup Mahal:Anup Mahal courtyard has a throne set in a pool of water, bringing alive the sensitivity the rulers showed in their building environment. A formal set of sandstone staircases, and the wooden Durbar Hall are additions made early in this century by Maharaja Ganga Singh.

Badal Mahal: Recreates paintings of clouds on its walls, a reminder of the monsoon that often failed the settlement

Phool Mahal, Chandra Mahal: They give the impression of a rich inlay of pietra dura, though in fact the apartments are merely richly painted. The paintings have been preserved as good as new because of the extremely dry heat conditions of the desert town.

Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum: It is one of the best in Rajasthan, and stores artifacts from the pre-Harappan civilisations, the Gupta and Kushan eras.

EXCURSIONS
Camel Breeding Farm: 10 km away, is probably the only one of its kind in Asia, and is managed by the government.

Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary: 32 km away, is located on the Jaisalmer road. Bluebull, chinkara and black buck can be found. There are flocks of imperial sand grouse too. The erstwhile hunting lodge is now a hotel.

Urs Ajmer Sharif, Ajmer

The urs, acommomerative celebration is held in the solemn memory of Khwaja Muin-nddin Chisti, a prighly respected sufi saint fondly revered as the benefactor of the poor, popularly known as Gareeb Nawaz.

The Dargah Sharif in Ajmer, is the place where the Saints mortal remains lie burried and is the site of the largest Muslim Fair in India.

Chadar; Ghilaph & Neema which are votive offerings for the tomb are offered by several hundred thousand devotees. Mehfils & Qawwalis are held and mass prayer calls for the eternal peace of the mankind.

An interesting ritual is the looting of Kheer (Milk Pudding) which is cooked in two large cauldrons called Degs and distributed to the devotees as tabarruk (blessed food).

The lakeside city of Ajmer is located in central Rajasthan, and is held in great reverence by devotees of all communities who call it ‘Ajmer Sharif’ (Holy Ajmer). It is here that the mortal remains of the highly respected Sufi saint Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishti lie buried.

The Khwaja came from Persia and established the Chishtia order of fakirs in India. He is popularly known as Gharib Nawaz (protector of the poor) because he dedicated his entire life to the service of mankind.

His spartan life spanned almost a hundred years and he embraced death in solitude while he had withdrawn to his cell for six days, asking not to be disturbed.

The Dargah Sharif in Ajmer is the place where the Saint’s mortal remains lie buried and is the site of the largest Muslim fair in India.

More than five lakh devotees belonging to different communities gather from all parts of the subcontinent to pay homage to the Khwaja on his Urs (death anniversary) during the first six days of Rajab (seventh month of the Islamic calendar.)

The pilgrims who come to seek the blessings of the Khwaja make rich offerings called nazrana at the holy spot where the saint has been entombed.

The offerings of rose and jasmine flowers, sandalwood paste, perfumes and incense contribute to the fragrance that floats in the air inside the shrine. Also offered by devotees are the chadar, ghilaph and neema, which are votive offerings for the tomb.

These are brought by devotees on their heads and handed over to the khadims inside the sanctum sanctorum. Outside the sanctum sanctorum of the dargah, professional singers called qawwals in groups and sing the praises of the saint in a characteristic high pitched voice.

People gather around them and listen attentively, sometimes clapping to the rhythm of their instruments.

The Urs is initiated with the hoisting of a white flag on the dargah by the Sajjada Nashin (successor representative) of Chishtis.

It is done on the 25th of Jamadi-ul-Akhir (sixth lunar month), with the accompaniment of music. On the last day of the sixth month, the Jannati-Darwaza (gateway of heaven) is flung open early in the morning. People cross this gate seven times with the belief that they will be assured a place in heaven.

On the 1st of Rajab, the tomb is washed with rose water and sandalwood paste and anointed with perfumes. This ritual is called ghusal. The tomb is then covered with an embroidered silk cloth by the Sajjada Nashin.

An interesting ritual is the looting of kheer (milk-pudding) which is cooked in two large cauldrons called degs and distributed to the devotees as tabarruk (blessed food).

On the 6th of Rajab, after the usual mehfil and the sound of cracker-bursts accompanied by music, the Sajjada Nashin performs the ghusal of the tomb.

Fatiha and Salamti are read. A poetic recitation called mushaira is arranged in which poets of all communities arrive to recite compositions dedicated to the Khwaja. The Qul (end-all) on the 6th of Rajab marks the end of the Urs.

At night, religious assemblies called mehfils are held in the mehfil-khana, a large hall meant for this purpose. These are presided over by the Sajjada Nashin of the dargah.

Qawwalis are sung and the hall is packed to capacity. There are separate places reserved for women who attend the mehfil. The mehfil terminates late in the night with a mass prayer for the eternal peace of the Khwaja in particular and mankind in general.

The Dargah is located at the conjunction of three bazaars. There are a number of restaurants around the Dargah where visitors can choose from a variety of dishes most of which are non-vegetarian preparations.

Guest houses on the road leading to the Dargah offer accommodation that ranges from economical to luxurious.

Many other guest houses are strewn across the city. The shops in the market around the Dargah sell flowers, prayer mats, rosaries, textiles, and general merchandise as well.

Ajmer is 132 kms. south-west of Jaipur and 198 kms. east of Jodhpur. It is connected by road to Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Udaipur and Kota. Ajmer is a railway junction on the Delhi-Ahmedabad section of the Western Railway. During the Urs, special buses ply from cities all over India carrying people to Ajmer and back.
